2004年アテネ五輪の開閉会式で音楽監督・作曲家を務めたヨルゴス・クメンダキス（1959-）は、ギリシャの現代音楽を代表する作曲家のひとりです。本盤の核となる《Desert Mediterraneen》は、地中海の動植物に着想を得た22の小品から成るピアノ連作で、地中海世界の光と乾き、自然の記憶、そして現代人と環境との関係を独自の音響風景として描いています。作品は小さな断片の集積でありながら、全体としてひとつの「地中海の地図」のように機能し、ギリシャ的、バルカン的、ビザンティン的な記憶と、バロック的なポリフォニー感覚とが自然に交差しています。
